Bipolar Affective Disorder Characterised by:

Repeated (at least 2) episodes where patient’s mood and activity levels are significantly disturbed.  This includes: 

Mania/Hypomania (A)

  • Elevation of mood
  • Increased energy and activity
  • Talkativeness
  • Disinhibition, both in speech and behaviour
  • Over familiarity
  • Increased sexual energy
  • Excessive spending
  • Indulging in risky behaviours
  • Decreased need for sleep
  • Irritability
  • Delusions of paranoia/persecution and/or grandeur

Depression (B)

As described under Depressive Disorder

Treatment

  • Supportive therapy/ counselling
  • Mood stabiliser medications
  • May need antidepressants and/or antipsychotic medication
