Bipolar Affective Disorder Characterised by:
Repeated (at least 2) episodes where patient’s mood and activity levels are significantly disturbed. This includes:
Mania/Hypomania (A)
- Elevation of mood
- Increased energy and activity
- Talkativeness
- Disinhibition, both in speech and behaviour
- Over familiarity
- Increased sexual energy
- Excessive spending
- Indulging in risky behaviours
- Decreased need for sleep
- Irritability
- Delusions of paranoia/persecution and/or grandeur
Depression (B)
As described under Depressive Disorder
Treatment
- Supportive therapy/ counselling
- Mood stabiliser medications
- May need antidepressants and/or antipsychotic medication
